What's your favorite scary book? How about your favorite scary movie? What TV show terrified you?
My head is a cluttered mess of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other speculative fiction goodies. One of my earliest "scares" came from watching Alien. Science fiction horror is a special brand of horror. The strange, terrifying, and unexpected in space (where no one can hear you scream) evokes the mystery and fear of the unknown.
Fantasy blends its own kind of terror. As despair swept over Helm's Deep, fear froze the heart. But fantasy is really great about letting the good guys arrive just in time, as it did when Gandalf the White arrived to save the day.
When I was a kid, I would lay in bed and listen to the eerie music from Tales of the Dark Side. I would occasionally be permitted to stay awake long enough to watch an episode, but the music itself always struck a terrible fear into me. Rewatching these episodes, I can't get over how cheesy they were. But as a rather innocent 8 year old, they were simply terrifying!
What frightens you?
